My husband and I got displaced from our Boston city apartment by a massive city water main break mid-April during the pandemic, so that was fun and not stressful at all! We had to move in with my mom in NH unexpectedly (god bless her). Our place in Boston became livable again in June. However the longer we are here in New Hampshire on the ocean with more space both indoors and outdoors - we don’t want to go back to Boston. Our Boston landlord is playing hardball and won’t drop rent beyond a 3% discount despite the pandemic, which is ridiculous given the exodus to suburbs. Plus depending on Boston universities’ decisions to go virtual or not, the entire Boston housing market could be affected. The city is not the same during a pandemic (not its fault) and why pay to live in one of the most expensive cities in the US when we can both work remotely (for now at least)? If the other 39 states that aren’t MA and NH keep essentially playing coronavirus spin the bottle and spiking, who knows when traditional work will ever “return to normal” anyways. We never thought we’d leave the city, we love it so much and have both been there over a decade, but it just feels easier to be in a smaller town with more space and fresh air until there is either a vaccine, treatment, or herd immunity.

By your standards, I'm an old lady. I'm 41, married with two little douchenuggets kids. I live 20 min north of Boston. We bought our home 7 years ago when the market was good...our house value has increase BIGTIME. If we sold our house today, we could make a shitton of money....but we would just put it towards an overpriced house, elsewhere in the area. The only way it would be worth it, would be to sell our home and more to an area that has a much lower cost of living. But, to me, the Northeast is the place to be (best schools, hospitals & family).

My job is in Boston but I don’t need to be in the office. My husband and I both grew up in Portland and have always wanted to live here we just couldn’t get jobs. Now that we are remote we are moving. We know this may be 1-2 years temporarily but worth it for now.

Moving because I lost my job due to Corona virus and had to defer from grad school for a year as well.

I said no I wasn’t moving because I already did. In March, I packed up my apartment in Boston and put everything in storage. I jumped on a plane with four suit cases, my dog and a plant to Arizona. I didn’t know what was going to happen with the pandemic and I thought that being around family would be better than paying $3K a month on a apartment in a closed city. I said I’d never move back to Arizona but here we are and I’m happy with my decision. If, I mean when, this is all over, then I’ll have saved a good amount of money to buy wherever I want to move.

Completely over Boston, plus the benefits of Miami just with Taxes and lifestyle are great!

I'm not planning to move, but we did consider buying a house furher away from the city. However, home prices remain outrageously high (and competition is Hunger Game-level intense) and our job markets (luxury and tech) are tenuous at best, so we don't feel it's the right time for a big financial investment. If we could find the right jobs that let us live well and work remotely... We'd already be packing.

Tough to justify $3000 a month for 750sq/ft when every possible perk of living in the city has evaporated. Quick commute to work! Now I just roll out of bed and stumble over to my desk Access to great outdoor spaces! Hard pass on crowded farmers markets where strangers touch the fruit before they buy it Let's go see a Red Sox game?! Mmmm, tough to justify the risk for a 5 hour game and $15 dollar hotdog Being in a bustling city is fun! If by fun, you mean "epicenter in the state for the virus," then yes it's fun. We're trading things off for a much larger, much cheaper, much quieter town that still affords us quick access to the city if we'd ever really like to be there.

Many of us impose a measurable tax upon ourselves simply by choosing to live and work in the northeast or west coast. Yes, the benefits are many in terms of access to quality hiring pools and prestige firms, but why not go somewhere now that my money goes further? I mean, lower cost of living and relocating to a state that doesn’t have an income tax could effectively give you a 15%-20% increase in net savings, and the you have so many more options.

I’m going to live with my parents in the suburbs. No rent, no winter during COVID sounds ideal.

I just moved into this bigger house just outside the city not really far from it. We bought near the city because the cities always reinvent themselves. I feel the city of Boston will become a bikers paradise no cars.

There's no need to keep paying these ridiculous rent prices to live near to work when my commute is now from my bedroom to my livingroom! I've also found that I never really spent much time in the city or missed it when city life went away. I want easier access to sunshine and seawater!

New job, 2020 college grad! Unrelated but convenient, the UK is not bumbling their COVID response to the same extreme degree as the USA, so turns out its likely going to be a great decision for my health as well.

I am moving because I have been living at our second home in NH since quarantine. The city has been insane and being up in NH has lots of walking, biking and boating areas. After staying here I’ve realized I want to move to the suburbs. During this time having more space and an outdoor area is great! My fiancé and I have decided to move in with my parents for a few months (our $2500 rent has been a waste since living in NH) to save money and buy a home in the burbs.

A job started the move but the reason we will stay is definitely because of this town. We have access to trails outside our door, 3 world class ski resorts within 10 minutes, tons of summer and winter activities and best of all the climate is a dream. Summers are hot, dry and consistent and winters have snow but good snow (light fluffy stuff). Coming from Boston and it's mood swing weather and horribly long, bitter cold winters I don't know that we'd ever move back. We are now seeing a ton of movement in the real estate market as folks escape cities to Park City. I expect COVID will only continue to inspire similar moves.
