Non Yuppie here, one near retirement, other retired, 53-69 yrs old and yes, we can still read...The Hustle included, does that mean we are?! Moving for 1. retirement planning & trying to preserve what we've earned over lifetime| avoiding state income tax, and onerous state and local regulations penalizing even single rental income households like ours with decreasing caps on rent increases, while mandating $4500 tenant moving assistance for 3-bed when not renewing a year lease, & high property taxes, lax accountability on bonds and taxes to decrease homelessness yet numbers increase YOY. Any wonder since prime real estate purchased to provide more services downtown attracting even more needing those services to camp out on the streets, destroying the vibrant and welcoming city we once were with squalid camps on sidewalks, and a $3.6 million+ budget for biohazard, fecal & needle housekeeping. City has responsibility to provide affordable housing and incentives for developers to build them, not a tax paying homeowner and especially not those owning 1-4 units to supplement their own ability to pay bills; 2. a new adventure & sunnier weather | discover the south and eastern seaboard; 3. awful traffic, comparisons drawn to LA commutes, despite Portland's 2.1 mil population, a fraction compared to LA's 12.4 mil.

Leaving in the next 5-6 years. The Portland Metro area is poorly managed, very expensive, and over populated. Leaving to escape.

I don't feel safe in/around Portland anymore. The mayor & city leadership won't protect the citizens & our property - they actually encourage rioting. Historical data shows that this kind of unrest devastates the urban community for decades - Detroit, east LA, Harlem - businesses fail or move out, & poverty ensues for year to come. Statistics show that low income, typically minority communities, are hit hardest & longest. Once loved this city but now I'm out.

My wife is a student at University of Oregon´s satellite campus in Portland. With most classes moving online, most of the amenities of the city partially or totally closed, doesn´t make sense to pay the extra cost of living here, when we could save by living in University housing, among other savings...

I grew up in a small mountain resort town in Idaho (Sun Valley) and had been living there on and off for the past few years while also backpacking and traveling. It was my homebase but I was ready to settle down and thought Portland was where I wanted to be. I went to school at University of Oregon, lived in Portland right after college and have always considered the state to be my second home. I had just moved back to Portland in January thinking that I was going to set-up my life there. I was applying for jobs, reconnecting with friends, looking at homes to rent, and then COVID hit. All of sudden I was completely isolated and didn't have access to what most important to me - nature and space. By the end of May, I realized Portland wasn't it. COVID had put everything in perspective for me and I knew I needed more space (for less money ), easy access to nature, and the ability to see my friends and family without having to drive 10 hours or get on a plane. So I made the move to Boise last week. I have double the space now for half the price I would get in Portland, I have easy access to the mountains, trails, and outdoors with half of the people, and I am still in a city that offers me opportunity and ability to further myself and my career, all while still being close to the people most important to me. It's the best move I could have made.

Portlands leaders (Ted and Kate) have ruined the city and neighborhoods - The City of Portland used to be vibrant and clean. Now a slum (like Seattle and SF)

I'd flee to another country if I could, but I can't so here I stay. Wanting to buy a house and waiting for inventory to show up on the market. Unfortunately I don't think Portland is seeing much out-migration.

I am a startup entrepreneur and currently CRO of a Portland based company. We always worked remote some days, but we went fully remote due to COVID. At that time, I asked myself if my Portland 1 bedroom apartment was worth it. My company’s software is an essential tool for remote workforces, so I’ve been research WFH statistics heavily lately, so a move was top of mind already. Between state income tax, car insurance, home insurance, and grocery differences, my cost of living adjustment is well over $700, not even including rent / mortgage differences. I plan to work fully remotely, spend time with family in the midwest, and travel in the winter (if countries decide to allow Americans in).

My job is in Boston but I don’t need to be in the office. My husband and I both grew up in Portland and have always wanted to live here we just couldn’t get jobs. Now that we are remote we are moving. We know this may be 1-2 years temporarily but worth it for now.

Our wedding was set for June and we planned to eventually leave NYC for a life away from big city stress and expensive living... enter COVID. We've been in Maine since March and given the current outlook, we find no reason to go back to the Empire State. The pandemic has postponed our wedding plans and accelerated our decision to settle where we can actually afford a home with a backyard, and be close to family, friends and fresh air. I will forever have fond memories of "the city" but a swift breakup is best. I love you NYC - it's not you, it's me.

We recently moved to a suburb of Portland. We moved because we outgrew our tiny 1-bedroom apartment in San Francisco after having our first baby. We wanted to buy a house and the only thing we could afford in the Bay Area (with two well paying tech salaries) was a tiny fixer-upper deep into the East Bay, which would have left us a soul-crushing commute into SF everyday. This would have been a rough quality of life -- spending nearly all of the day in the car or office, getting home just in time to put our baby to bed. Instead, we convinced our employers to let us go remote and bought a 3,500 sq. ft., new-construction home with a mortgage payment equal to what we paid in rent for our ancient and dilapidated 1-bedroom apartment in SF.

We already moved! Some of the best job opportunities and highest paying roles within the tech industry are in San Francisco which is what brought my boyfriend and I here just about a decade ago. Living in Oakland (575 sq foot studio) and commuting to SF almost everyday with an avg commute time of 1.25 hours both morning and evening takes its toll. Due to COVID-19 our companies are now fully remote (permanently) which allows us to consider which city we want to live in providing us a better quality of life. We have always loved Portland: hikes, bikes and beers and a little rain?! No sales tax and cost of living is dramatically less than the bay area -- winning on all accounts. We wasted no time when starting to look for a new home as almost half of our friend group in the bay area was doing the same thing. Side note: 4 of our friends have moved already to Bozeman Montana, San Diego CA, Rochester New York and Denver CO. Which we figured meant a larger population in the Bay Area had the same great idea. We wanted to act fast as Portland's real estate market had not slowed down during these times and many people were making the exodus up north just like us. So 3 weeks later, we purchased our FIRST home (because we can afford a home outside the bay area) in Portland. We packed up a Uhaul and drove up on our closing date! Like I said, all this already happened :) We closed last Tues June 30th. We could not be happier in our new home. We haven't missed a day of work in the transition either so its a win-win for everybody. We went from a first floor, 575 sq foot studio with no direct natural sunlight in Oakland to a 2,900 sq foot 2 story home (with basement) with a lovely backyard. Best decision we made was to buy our first home in a global pandemic and get out of the Bay Area.

I am a co-founder and CEO of a biotech based ‘clean cleaning’ startup that is changing how home & laundry care products are formulated in order to be both effective and also safe for users and the planet. While thankfully a science backed cleaning business is very relevant in COVID times, our current pre-launch raise was kicked off in the thick of it. Our core team is distributed in four cities and when we looked hard at the options (New York, Austin, Scottsdale, and Portland), we made the call to choose Portland as the headquarters that we all could agree on for a number of reasons including cost of doing business, access to talent, livability, and a culture that embraces sustainability. I have been in New York for coming up on eight years. I love this city and my friends and community here. However, living here does come at a premium in cost of living and space. COVID has had a severe impact on the social AMD business interactions and benefits of being here so you’re not really “getting what you’re paying for” in many ways. While there’s a part of me that really wants to be a part of the change and recovery here, I am making what feels like the best decision for Dirty Labs. We’re optimizing costs while bringing our team together in a single location prior to our launch, and our investors are supporting the move.
